Registration Tips

Consultations for Private Music Lessons

Music students or their parents/guardians have the opportunity to receive a personal consultation as part of the registration process. The consultation can be conducted by telephone or in person, and is a chance to discuss where to begin, what instrument to study, or what types of instruction might be most appropriate. Any special individual needs can be addressed at that time. Contact Mary Bloom, head of music education, at mbloom@neighborhoodmusicschool.org or 203-624-5189 x 16.

Trial Lessons

Want to see if a particular instrument or teacher is right for you or your child? Schedule a trial lesson: $39.25 for 30 minutes, no further commitment. If it’s a good fit, we’ll sign you up! Speak to our placement manager, Melanie Radawiec, for arrangements: mradawiec@neighborhoodmusicschool.org or 203-624-5189, ext. 24.

Placement of New Students

Assignment of newly registered students for private lessons is based on teacher availability as well as the student’s learning style and interests. Placement Office staff will contact you by e-mail or phone to discuss and confirm the student’s placement. To help us better accommodate your schedule, please be thorough when filling out the preferred and unavailable days/times section during registration.v We will get back to you quickly to confirm details.

Registration Confirmation

Students will receive telephone, mail or e-mail confirmation of day/time and instruction starting date before the start of their lesson, class or ensemble. Please note: during peak registration, confirmation of student placement may take longer.

Registration Once the Semester Has Begun

NMS operates on a two-semester academic calendar (Fall and Spring), with a Summer session.  Students, new or returning, may enroll at any point during the year but should understand that earlier enrollment allows for a greater selection of teachers and times. Tuition for private lessons will be pro-rated from the point at which the student enters and based on the actual number of lessons scheduled. Registration for group classes after the first two meetings is at the discretion of the instructor.

Spring / Early Registration for Returning Students

Early registration for Fall begins in late May and ends June 30. For private lessons, it is recommended that returning students or parents consult with your current teacher regarding Fall lesson length, day, time and any supplemental instruction (e.g., ensembles, theory). If at the time you register, your teacher is not certain of his/her Fall schedule, the placement manger will contact you to coordinate a time as soon as the schedule is known. By registering early, you receive priority scheduling. Returning students who register after the early registration deadline may forfeit priority scheduling.

Registrations received after the open registration period commences are processed on a first come-first served basis.

IMPORTANT: Registrations received without the required deposits do not serve as a reservation of a returning student’s time slot.  Registrations will only be processed when complete.
